Lab: Leveraging Azure Storage with SQL Server

In this lab, you learn about leveraging Azure storage with SQL Server. We will cover hosting data files directly from Azure Storage, backup to URL and snapshot backups.

  • Estimated time required to complete: 2 hours, 5 minutes
  • You will have access to this environment for 4 hours, 0 minutes
  • Learning Credits Required: 5

Learning Objectives

  • Hosting SQL data files directly in Azure storage.
  • Leveraging SQL Server backup to URL to backup directly to Azure Storage.
  • Leveraging snapshot backups for sub-second backups and restores.

  • A basic understanding of Azure Infrastructure as a service

Exercise 1: Creating Databases with Data Files in Azure Storage
In this exercise, you will create an Azure Storage Account as a target for your SQL data files. You will then create a Shared Access Signature to allow access to the storage container for your data files and create a credential in SQL Server to access the container using the shared access signature. Finally, you will restore a database to your SQL Server with the data files in Azure Storage.
Exercise 2: Moving Databases Between Virtual Machines with Data Files in Azure Storage
In the next exercise, you will create a new SQL Server Virtual Machine. You will then detach the database created in the previous lab and attach it to the new VM you just created without moving the data files from the Azure Storage account.
Exercise 3: Backup/Restore to URL Hosted on Azure Storage

In this exercise, you will create a storage account for use with the SQL Server Backup to URL feature. You will execute a backup and a restore from Azure Storage. You will then backup and restore a database using Azure Snapshot Backups.

Exercise 4: Backup and Restore with Azure Snapshots

In the next exercise, you will use File-Snapshots to backup a SQL Server database. You will then restore a database to a previous point in time using File-Snapshot Backups.
